Journal Entry #6 - Caught In Lies

Have you ever considered that the news you read (or watch or hear) may be factually incorrect or even fabricated? Explain why or why not. Yes, I have noticed that the news I read could be fake or not true news because some stories seem to be very unrealistic and the people could just be doing it for the attention that follows the story. Some journalist stretch out the truth to make the story more believable and interesting.   What is your reaction to the two articles? Were you surprised to find out that professional journalists have fabricated news? I was surprised by the two news articles, after reading them I realized that it made sense to me and I was not shocked by the news they have made up. Journalist Jack Shafer writes “most liars make things up for the simple reason that they don't have the talent or the ability to get the story any other way.” Do you agree with Shafer's assertion? Explain. Yes, I do agree with Shafer because liars do make up things and tell...

Journal Entry #5 Hard News vs. Soft News

Soft News        This article on CBC about Justin Timberlake Invited Back to the Super Bowl Halftime Show, is soft soft news because it is not that interesting and/or important to the outside world. On this article there is a photo that is included in this article also. The article states that Justin Timberlake has been invited back to the Halftime Show after a wardrobe malfunction 14 years ago. I would say that this is human-interest. This story has some hard news characteristics but more soft in my opinion, it presents just the basic information. The story quotes Justin Timberlake in many ways by telling what he thought about the situation, he claims that the malfunction will not happen again. This article did not go in depth, it just gave basic information about what the story is based on, this is an example of soft news because the topics are softly touched on and there is nothing that really stands out. Hard News      This article on Huffin...

Journal Entry #4 - What is Newsworthy?

Dalhousie University Homecoming Celebrations Lead to 22 Arrests Click here for the link. Timing - 3/4 I gave this that score because the event happened on Saturday, October 14th and the article was not posted until Monday, October 16th. I believe they should have posted this on the day the event happened or the following day.  Significance- 2/4 I do not believe this has much significance because it would only effect the people who live in the around there. They would be effected by the partiers and the board of the University. Proximity- 3/4 I believe it would be interesting to read because the people will know the place the are reading and will understand it better. Prominence- 3/4 The University students are pinpointed in this article but they are not pointed out int he huge world around us. Human Interest- 3/4 To some people this article might interest but not many. In this article there was no life or death situations or anything major that occurred s...

Journal Entry #3 - Writing the News Articles

Image
Tragedy Hit Last Night on the People of Johnsonville  Last night around 1:35, a bunch of reckless teenagers lit the oldest house known to the village on fire while Mrs. Johnson was still in there.  These teens said, and I quote "we were playing around with fireworks and something went wrong." They claim they didn't know that something like this would happen, the teens didn't know Mrs. Johnson was still in there but she came out alive. Brad Berry said, "The kids shouldn't even be around the house at night, why were they shooting off fireworks so close to the house? Where else did they think little old Mrs. Johnson was? Out partying?" Berry was not at all impressed by the fact the teens were hanging around there, he is looking out for his 96 year old Aunt and she is all he has left.  Mrs. Carla Johnson was born in 1921 on March 26. Mrs. Johnson was given the house by her late grandfather Willard Johnson who died at the age of 112 in 1950. ...

Journal Entry #2 - Starting With The Basics

LOCAL MAN ACCUSED OF MURDER! On Saturday, April 23, 2016, a 20 year old man was accused with killing a 49 year old.  Yes, I believe the lead is effective because this is a local guy who killed someone in the Chatham area. He is now sentenced to 15 years in prison due to the charges he is given.  "You should be going to jail, but your not." "I hope you rot in jail."  This article is very eye catching to anyone that lives in Blackville or the surrounding areas. This young man has caused so much trouble around here that he is recognized for what he has done. By stating that a local killed a man is going to grab the attention of others because everyone likes to know whats going on around here.    On September 26, 7 new volunteer firefights were hired after a City Council meeting. After the entry level training that had to completed, all seven firefighters are suitable to continue training at a higher level. They will be a Level 1 Firefighter course in Octo...

Journal Entry #1 - First Newpapers

When looking at the first ever newspaper and comparing it to the ones you see today, they are very different but also look similar. First off, the way 'Publick' is spelt, and there is no pictures or bold headings. The pages looks quit similar to the ones we look at and read about now.  No, I do not think the government should have that much control over what news should be. To me, the news is about something important. Sometimes the government doesn't always want us to see the truth but it has to be seen sometime. I think it is critical to the government, businesses and etc. because we need to see the real side of those things. It is not all the time people want to hear about their favorite store or restaurant has wrong with it or how your local Mayor did something very wrong but it is bound to happen. People see it as how bad it is, I see how real it is. I believe that the people who buy and support the newspapers help from getting the paper shut down when there is som...
